Three Tips for Wearing a Face Mask with Hearing Aids

Wearing a mask with hearing aids

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, face masks have become a common way to protect yourself from illness when you're out and about. But, if you have hearing aids, wearing a mask can be cumbersome. Below are three tips to take the stress out of wearing a mask with hearing aids.

1. Ties to the back of your head

Make or invest in a mask that ties to the back of your head. Masks with ear loops can be problematic for those with behind-the-ear (BTE) style hearing aids. While securing or removing the ear loops you may risk bumping your hearing aids out of place or they may fall out of your ear completely, increasing your risk of losing or damaging them. A mask that ties around the back of your head will help keep your hearing aids where they need to be – in your ears!

2. ‘Hack’ your mask

If you already have a mask with ear loops, secure the loops using some of these creative solutions:

  • Sew two large buttons onto a headband just over your ears. You can also purchase a ready-made headband through many online retailers.
  • Purchase a mask extender that will allow you to secure the loops to the back of your head. You can also make your own using a piece of extra fabric and buttons.

3. Smartphone to find a lost hearing aid

If you lose your hearing aids, don’t fret! Many of today’s hearing aids come equipped with GPS tracking ability that will allow you to locate your lost hearing aid using your smartphone or tablet. If you’re not sure if your device has this capability, reach out to your hearing care provider. But, if you still can’t find your hearing aids or if they were damaged, don’t worry. If you purchased your hearing aids through Amplifon, you’ll be covered by our three year warranty for loss, damage, or repair.*
