Hearing Insurance for Seniors

As we age, much of our daily life changes—and hearing is no exception. For seniors, gradual changes in hearing often lead to a growing need for hearing care services and devices.

With these changing needs, hearing insurance for seniors becomes an important consideration. Understanding insurance types, what they cover, and how they align with your hearing needs can help you make the right choice for your overall well-being.

Why Hearing Health Needs Change with Age

Hearing loss is a common part of aging; 31% of Americans 65 and older have hearing loss, and that percentage increases with age.  Age related changes in the hair-like cells in our ears, exposure to loud environments over a lifetime, and medical conditions like diabetes or cardiovascular disease can all contribute to age-related hearing loss. In turn, hearing loss can directly impact your physical and mental well-being, so finding hearing insurance for seniors and paying attention to your hearing health becomes increasingly important as you age.

For the sake of your overall well-being, it’s important that your hearing health care covers:

  • Regular hearing care appointments to monitor hearing loss.
  • Hearing aids that fit your personal needs, lifestyle, and budget.
  • Ongoing hearing health issues that may come up as you age.

What Insurance Covers Hearing Aids for Seniors?

Currently, Medicare Parts A and B and Medicare supplements don’t cover the cost of hearing aids. However, Part B covers diagnostic hearing and balance exams when ordered by a doctor as part of your medical treatment.

Here are some types of insurance and programs that may cover hearing aids:

Medicare Advantage Plans (Medicare Part C)

Many Medicare Advantage plans offer additional benefits.  Depending on the plan, you may receive partial or full coverage for hearing exams and hearing aids, potentially reducing out-of-pocket costs. Coverage can vary by plan, so make sure you ask about hearing care coverage when considering a Medicare Advantage plan.

Medicaid

Coverage under Medicaid varies by state but can include hearing services for seniors with limited income. For those who qualify, Medicaid may cover hearing aids, evaluations, and follow-up care. Check your state’s Medicaid program for details.

Private Insurance Plans

Some private insurance plans offer hearing benefits as part of their coverage, though they vary widely regarding eligibility, covered services, and costs.

Veterans Affairs (VA) Benefits

Veterans who qualify for VA healthcare can often receive hearing aids at no cost, depending on their disability rating and income level. Veterans should contact their VA representative for more information.

Federal Employee Health Benefits (FEHB) Program

Federal employees, retirees, and their dependents may have some coverage for hearing aids under FEHB plans. Coverage details can vary.

Employer-Sponsored Retiree Plans

Some employer-sponsored health plans for retirees may provide hearing aid benefits as part of extended coverage. Retirees should review their specific plans or consult with their benefits administrator.

Adapting Hearing Insurance as Needs Change

Hearing loss is often progressive, meaning how much coverage you need will likely change over time.

Hearing loss often happens gradually. This is a great time to get your hearing checked to make sure you catch hearing loss early. There are many benefits to addressing hearing loss early, including preserving your existing hearing. Waiting can make things worse down the line.

If you’re still working, check your benefits through your employer or union.

Around age 65, many Americans become eligible for Medicare.

Look for a Medicare Advantage plan that covers annual hearing exams and discounts or coverage for hearing aids. Get your hearing checked so your hearing health care provider can monitor hearing loss and fit you for hearing aids that match your specific hearing loss needs and lifestyle.

Age 70s-80s

By age 75, nearly half of people have difficulty hearing. At this point, it’s critical to have plans that cover a greater portion of hearing aid costs, regular check-ups, and follow-up visits to fine-tune hearing aids for changing needs.

Associated health conditions

If you have comorbidities often associated with hearing loss (e.g., diabetes, cognitive decline, or heart conditions), it’s even more important to get your hearing checked regularly by a professional.

Planning for Long-Term Hearing Health

Untreated hearing loss can impact overall physical and mental well-being. Take a proactive approach to hearing health. Look for insurance that not only meets your current needs but also allows flexibility for future care. Once you’ve selected your insurance, review your coverage annually. Medicare Advantage and other plans often update their coverage each year. Looking through your coverage each year can help you find any new or expanded benefits that may be beneficial to you and your hearing.

It’s also important to schedule regular check-ups with a hearing health care provider. They can provide insights into changes in hearing health and guide decisions about necessary treatment.
